It is a formal academic process through which a university assesses a professional’s existing knowledge, skills, and work experience and converts that into academic credit towards a degree.

In simple terms: your years of work experience count as part of your qualification.

What Is RPL?

Instead of sitting through subjects you already know in practice, RPL lets you demonstrate that competency and move straight to completing the remaining credits needed for your degree.

How Does RPL Work in Distance Education?

Through distance education, the RPL process typically works like this:

Application & Profile Assessment: You submit your academic background, work history, job roles, certifications, and any prior training.

Credit Mapping: The university maps your experience against the syllabus of the program you’re enrolling in.

Credit Award: Subjects or modules you can demonstrate competency in are awarded as direct credit, with no exams required for those units.

Remaining Coursework: You study and complete only the modules not covered by your prior learning.

Degree Awarded: Once all requirements are met, you receive the full, accredited degree, the same as any other graduate.

Who Is RPL Best Suited For?

RPL mode is ideal for:

Mid-career professionals with 5–15+ years of work experience but no formal degree

Senior executives who have been promoted based on skill but lack the academic credential for their level

Professionals seeking a degree upgrade, for example moving from a diploma to a Bachelor’s, or a Bachelor’s to an MBA

Those who completed partial studies years ago and want to finish without repeating covered ground

Candidates applying for government roles where a degree is mandatory for the pay grade

What Experience Qualifies for RPL?

Universities assess prior learning across several categories:

Type of Prior Learning

Accepted Examples

Work Experience

Job titles, responsibilities, years in role, employer letters

Professional Certifications

CPA, PMP, CIMA, SHRM, Cisco, and similar credentials

Prior Academic Credits

Incomplete degrees, diploma certificates, short courses

Training & Development

Corporate training programs, workshops, internal courses

Published Work or Projects

Reports, business plans, documented outcomes

Note: Not all experience qualifies for every subject. The university determines which credits are awarded based on the evidence provided.

RPL in the GCC: Why It’s Growing

Across the UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, and KSA, RPL-based distance degrees are growing rapidly. The region has a large population of highly experienced professionals who built careers without formal degrees and now face barriers because of that gap.

Key drivers of RPL demand in the GCC include:

Emiratization, Saudization, and nationalization policies requiring formal qualifications for public sector roles

Banking and financial services increasingly mandating degree-level credentials for senior positions

Professionals seeking salary upgrades tied to academic qualifications in government pay structures

Executives targeting board-level roles that list a Masters or MBA as a requirement

RPL vs. Regular Distance Learning: Key Differences

RPL Mode

Regular Distance Mode

Entry Basis

Work experience + academic background

Academic qualifications

Duration

Often shorter, as credit reduces study load

Full program duration

Exam Requirement

Reduced, as credited subjects are exempt

Full examination for all modules

Best For

Experienced professionals

Fresh graduates or early-career

Degree Awarded

Same accredited degree

Same accredited degree

Common RPL Questions Answered

Is an RPL degree lesser in value than a regular one?

No. The degree awarded is identical. RPL simply recognizes that some learning already happened outside a classroom.

How long does RPL take?

Depending on the credits awarded and the remaining coursework, many professionals complete RPL-based programs in 12–24 months rather than the full program duration.

Is an RPL degree recognized in the UAE?

Yes, provided the university is accredited and the degree is eligible for UAE Ministry of Education attestation. Brillianz Education works exclusively with universities whose RPL programs meet these requirements.

What documents are needed for RPL?

Typically: an updated CV, employment certificates, job descriptions, professional certifications, and any prior academic transcripts.

Why Brillianz Education for RPL?

At Brillianz Education, we specialize in helping working professionals across the UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, KSA, and Sri Lanka access RPL-based degree programs through our affiliated accredited universities.

Our team handles the entire credit assessment process, from evaluating your experience to matching it with the right program, so you’re not navigating the process alone.

Programs available via RPL mode include:

BBA: Bachelor of Business Administration

MBA: Finance, HR, Marketing, IT Management, General Management

MCA: Master of Computer Applications

PhD: for eligible senior professionals

RPL stands for Recognition of Prior Learning.
